5 things to consider when choosing a dental floss

While choosing a dental floss may seem like a simple task, there are a few things you need to keep in mind and consider when choosing which one is best for you.  Choosing the correct dental floss is essential in maintaining a healthy oral care routine.

1.    First, decide which kind of floss is best for your teeth.  Floss comes in waxed, or unwaxed.  To decide which is right for you, consider the spacing of your teeth.  If you teeth are close together with extremely small spaces, you will want to choose waxed floss.  Waxed floss glides easier and more smoothly between teeth, making it easier to get in the small spaces.  On the other hand, if your teeth are spaced a little wider apart, it will become a personal preference.  However, if your teeth have wide gaps between them, you may consider getting tape dental floss.  Tape dental floss is wider, making it more convenient to get in the bigger space.
2.    The next thing you will need to decide on is whether you will get flavored or unflavored floss.  This is basically whatever you personally prefer.  However, you may consider getting flavored floss in case you need it at a time when brushing isn't an option to give your mouth a fresh, clean taste.  Flosses come in many different flavors such as spearmint, cinnamon and wintergreen.
3.    Most floss comes in individual containers that allow you to determine the amount of floss you need.  These flosses are used by wrapping floss around two separate fingers and maneuvering the floss between the fingers through the teeth.  However, in recent times, they have created individual flossers that hold a piece of floss in a plastic handle.  If you have limited dexterity or difficulty using your hands, you may want to choose these individual flossers as they make it easier to manipulate the floss in your mouth.
4.    Floss also comes in many different types of varieties and assortments of material.  Most are made out of things like polymer, cord and nylon.  There are also flosses available that are made out of new and innovative materials that make it extremely easy for the floss to glide in between the teeth, which lessens the chance for injury to the teeth and gums.  You may also want to choose floss made out of Teflon-like materials if you have small spaces between your teeth to prevent the floss from fraying and tearing.
5.    Keep in mind that good floss and any dental products don't have to cost a lot of money, but don't buy lower quality just to save the money.  Your oral health is something you should never take lightly.  Most products you buy will come down to your personal preference.  Try different varieties until you find what you like and what you are comfortable with.  In fact, when you visit your dentist, ask for several different samples to experiment with.

While your personal preferences will generally be the deciding factor in which kind of floss you use, there are several different things to keep in mind.  Talk to your dentist about the types and varieties of floss he would recommend based on the spacing, health, and strength of your teeth.  Your dentist will be able to recommend the best choice and option available for you individually.
