Why having a family dentist is as important as your family doctor

You may be surprised that it is as important for good dental health to have a family dentist as a family doctor is to your family's health.  There are many advantages to having a family dentist who knows the family's history and can treat the entire family.  You should consider these advantages when choosing your dental plan and dentist.

A family doctor is often a general practitioner that treats the entire family for general items.  If you or a family member acquires a health issue that requires a specialist's attention then the general practitioner is able to recommend a specialist and see that you are seen by the right people.

Your family doctor is able to monitor your health and provide for your basic needs.  Because the doctor sees your entire family he understands your health history and knows too look for certain ailments that may run in the family.  This gives him an advantage when seeing members of the family and trying to diagnose illnesses.

Your dental health is very similar to your over all health.  You have inherited your parent's teeth whether that is good or bad.  You will most likely have the same problems or benefits of good teeth that they had assuming that you both take care of your teeth similarly.  Hence, your children will most likely have the same issues that you have experience.  By finding and staying with a family dentist you can help the entire family have a better dental experience.

A family dentist will be able to understand your family's teeth better having a history with the family.  Some families have harder teeth than others.  Some families seem to get cavities no matter how much they brush and floss.  Some families will need orthodontist work and everybody knows that even before the baby begins teething.  This history will allow your family dentist to better prevent these problems.

For example, your dentist is able to treat your teeth in several ways to help prevent cavities.  If your family is prone to cavities, then you may want to have the entire family treated.  Additionally, you and your dentist may decide that your children need to have appointments more often than his other patients.  The opposite may be true to in that if you have really good teeth, you may not have to go as often.

Furthermore, your dentist may be able to help your family avoid some of the bigger dental issues by knowing your family's history.  If you and your spouse have experienced large problems, then your dentist can identify these issues early in the family and prevent them when possible.  For instance, if you have a lot of teeth and your mouth is so crowded that your teeth required braces, your dentist will most likely want to make sure that your children have their teeth pulled to allow room for all of their teeth.  This could possibly save your children from needing braces.

Additionally, you will most likely experience cost savings by having the entire family go to the same dentist.  Most dentists carry a family rate so you won't have to pay for each person in the family.  Plus you will experience savings by taking the children to the same doctor instead of taking everybody to multiple locations.

In summary, a family dentist is as important to your family's teeth as your doctor is to your health.  By having a family dentist you have your dental history known by a professional that can monitor and prescribe for your dental health.  Additionally, most families experience a cost saving by using the same dentist.

How important is keeping baby teeth healthy?

Many people think that because baby teeth eventually just fall out, that it isn't extremely important to take good care of them.  However, this isn't the case at all.  It is as important to take care of baby teeth as it is to take care of permanent teeth once they come in.  Here are several reasons why it is important, as well as the potential negative affects that can occur as a result of taking poor care of the baby teeth.

It is extremely important for babies and little children to have strong and healthy teeth to develop their ability to speak.  Children being learning to talk clearly early on and it is crucial that their mouth is healthy so their speech patterns aren't negatively affected from the beginning.  Once their speech has developed, it is difficult in later years to overcome any problems that have may have risen.
It is necessary for children's nutrition that they have healthy teeth to be able to chew their food thoroughly.  If the baby teeth aren't taken care, they may cause pain or fall out prematurely which will hinder the child from chewing their food completely.  This can then cause nutritional and digestive problems
One of the primary reasons for having baby teeth is to create space for the permanent teeth to come in.  If baby teeth aren't cared for, it is more than likely that they will rot or fall out early.  This can have a devastating effect on the permanent teeth when they come in.  In most cases, it will cause the permanent teeth to grow in too close together and crowded which can cause them to be severely crooked.  On the other hand, if baby teeth are cared for and kept healthy, they will create the necessary space for the permanent teeth to come in straight.  This could save a lot of time and money on braces later on in life.
When baby teeth aren't cared for and brushed, bacteria remains in the mouth and spreads.  This causes decay to other teeth, damage to the gums and may even cause damage to the developing permanent teeth.  It is important that the teeth are brushed so bacteria in the mouth will be killed and removed so more serious problems don't arise.
Children will more than likely experience pain and toothaches if their baby teeth aren't cared for properly.  This is unnecessary suffering that could easily be avoided by taking care of the baby teeth.
We all begin to develop our self-esteem and confidence from the time that we are little children.  Children whose baby teeth aren't cared for may struggle with themselves from an earlier age, especially if it does cause problems to permanent teeth.  However, if baby teeth are cared for and bring in healthy permanent teeth, it will help the child develop a healthy self image early on in life.
It is crucial for the child's future dental health that they are taught from an early age that taking care of their teeth is extremely important.  Habits form early on in life and it is crucial that children understand that they must care for their teeth.  If this is neglected to be taught to the children when they are little, chances are it will not be a priority as the child grows which will most likely cause very serious dental problems later on in life.

It is an incredibly big mistake to assume that it is not important to care for baby teeth because they are going to fall out anyway.  It is crucial that teeth are cared for properly from the beginning to ensure healthy permanent teeth will grow in and to promote healthy oral care throughout the child's life.
