How to prevent tartar buildup

Tartar buildup is the accumulation of hardened plaque on the teeth, specifically around and under the gumline.  While tarter is a fairly common condition, it is very serious and can lead to several incredibly severe conditions, including gum disease.  Tarter buildup can make your teeth noticeable less attractive.  Tarter is also very porous which allows it easily absorbs stains, making your smile and teeth discolored and dull.  It is important to know what causes tarter buildup and how to prevent it so you can avoid the serious complications it can cause as well as the unfortunate cosmetic affects.

The most important step you can take to prevent tartar buildup on your teeth is to establish a meticulous oral care routine.  You should be brushing at least twice a day to remove plaque.  It is best to brush after every meal if at all possible and every night before bed.  Many types of toothpastes main purpose is tarter control.  Discuss your personal oral health situation with your dentist, if you are susceptible to tarter buildup, it may be wise to use those specific toothpastes to control tarter.  You should also be flossing at least once a day.  Discuss proper brushing and flossing techniques with your dentist to be sure your oral health routine is as effective as possible.  While it can seem like spending so much time and energy each day to care for your teeth can't be very important, it will end up saving you time in the dental chair and expensive procedures because you will have healthy, strong teeth.
You need to make sure you are visiting your dentist every six months for regular cleanings and checkups.  While you can prevent tartar buildup every day by brushing, only your dentist can tell you if you are doing a good enough and proper job of getting rid of plaque.  Your dentist will be able to tell you what to do different or what products may be most effective in your particular situation.  Never make the mistake of thinking you know best when it comes to your teeth.  Be sure you aren't missing appointments or putting them off for any reason, even if it is for financial reasons.  Realize that the longer you stay away from the dentist, the more problems are going to arise and the more money you will have to spend to fix those problems.
If you haven't been taking the proper steps to prevent tartar buildup, such as correct brushing and regular dentist visits, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to get tartar buildup removed before more serious complications arise.  Once tartar buildup is formed, only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove it through a process called "scaling".  Never try to do this on your own, only they have the right instruments to remove the tartar without causing further problems or injury to your teeth.

Tarter buildup in your mouth can lead to a lot of serious complications as well as unattractive teeth and gums.  Be sure to develop and stick to a strict dental daily routine so you are preventing plaque and tartar buildup.  While it can take time to do a great, thorough job each day, it will be well worth the results in the long run.
